I know Wahpeton had a down year by its standards here in 2016, and got walloped by St. Mary's in early September, and then by regional rivals Shanley and Kindred in league play. I'm not sure what the Huskies have returning in 2017, but evidently a lot of experience if they're being touted as a possible state champion next fall! I still think St. Mary's will be the team to beat with Coach Smrekar at the helm and a huge number of kids on the roster. Certainly, Shanley will be in the mix and the AA newcomers Devils Lake and Jamestown should make some noise, too! Out west, Watford City will be more competitive with a lot of veterans back in the fold. By the way, when watching St. Mary's on a couple of occasions this fall, I truly believed the Saints would have held their own in AAA football and likely would have been in the top-half of the WDA standings this year along with the other Bismarck teams. The Capital City had some tremendous football players showcasing their talents in 2016!

St. Mary's and Shanley always do well. Wahpeton has 7 seniors returning. RBs and some linemen. Smkerar is a very strong coach and has had the talent in the past 4 years to only have 3 losses. We will just have to watch

Too early to tell what effect Devils Lake and Jamestown will have on AA next year. Shanley will have a year more experience for their young line. St. Mary's will have a brand new line which will be a huge challenge. They still have Gendreau and a whole bunch of speed (blazing speed) coming up, though, and will give teams a fit.

Should be fun to watch!

St. Mary's and Shanley are likely the cream of the crop next year.

Jamestown and Devils Lake are wildcards as they had down years in 2016, but one doesn't know if that is due to the AAA competition or the state of their programs.

Central Cass returns a talented sophomore class that contributed significantly to a team that was picked 6th in AA East in 2016, yet managed a #4 seed in the AA playoffs. It would seem they are only going to improve with the number of returners they have, including the entire offensive and defensive line (1 Jr, 4 So. in 2016), QB (So. in 2016, started all year), RB (So. split time in 2016), 2 WR (So. in 2016 split time). On Defense, they return 3 of 4 DL, 1 JR. and 2 So., and the 2nd leading tackler on their team a So. LB. The Squirrels will need to shore up the back end of their defense and the LB core as well as find go-to WR's.

Rather than, "Way to Early Prediction", with the regular season about to start, what are the thoughts on the new AA season?
