I agree with the predictions posted for this weekend's quarterfinal-round of the AA football state playoffs. I think the home teams will prevail in each matchup, with both 3 v. 2 contests being very tight. Certainly, on paper, St. Mary's appears to be the top dog. The Saints are averaging over 40 pts/game and yielding under 10 points/contest. Their line play has been outstanding all-season-long and their skill-position players are solid. I'm forecasting an East v. West final (Shanley against St. Mary's), but I'd love to see Beulah advance to the Dakota Bowl and get a chance for a repeat title!

I'd like to see Kindred beat out shanley. Would shake thing up so that the final isn't shanley... again... but I don't think shanley will alliw that
Score 35-21 shanley

St. Marys has been a dominant team and i might be biased as a saints fan. They have been a strong team for 4 years only being beat out by Beulah last year. I do believe Dan and the team will prevail
Score 41-28

This leaves Shanley and St. Mary's in the final. Saints were able to shake them earlier this year, but the deacons are a very strong team and have been for years. In the last 7 games (I believe) between these teams the saints are 7-0. A lot of pressure will be on the saints to uphold that and win state. However there rushing defense is strong with a great line. Again my biased but I think saints will prevail
Score 21-17 Saints are the 2016 state champions

I witnessed the Kindred-Beulah game last week in Coal Country and was duly impressed by Kindred's offensive firepower! The Vikings' QB Ethan Lingen misfired on just one pass and had only a single interception in throwing for 184 yards and 3 touchdowns! Lingen's targets--Brock Benson and Nicky Zink--are really good, too! Additionally, Kindred's running game is solid in the hands of Derek Houska. I can see Kindred providing a stiff test to Shanley this Saturday; but I anticipate the Deacons coming away with a win on their home turf. In the other semi, I foresee St. Mary's winning comfortably over Hillsboro-Central Valley. That would give us another Shanley v. St. Mary's showdown in the Dakota Bowl. I'd favor the Saints in the rematch; but I think the contest will be close and will go down to the wire! It's pretty cool to see Dan Smrekar still at the helm of St. Mary's football after nearly four decades and enjoying the success he's had in recent seasons!

I was very surprised by Kindred this week. I haven't been able to watch any games but hear they are an offensive powerhouse. St. Mary's defense is very good however. I was able to watch the H-CV vs SM game and was very surprised by the defense SM really has. H-CV was within 20 yards of scoring and SM pushed them back 5 yards and forced a turnover. I believe SM has been a great team and with the momentum they have they can certainly put the season away.

Kindred did pull back against shanley and win. I was very impressed by their performance.

I think the score will end up being SM 35-21 Kindred

St Mary's wins the title

After watching the championship game, I wouldn't be shocked if St. Mary's could compete with any of the AAA schools. I believe they would beat most on any Friday. The championship game was a dominating performance. They had some big kids on their OL & DL that imposed their will, & I can only wonder how they would've done if they were a AAA school this year. If anyone on here is from Bismarck with some insight, chime in.

In reply to this. I am a saints fan. We were a very strong team this year and I feel as if we will be a very strong team next year as well. Our Sophmore/Freshman was able to crush Minot before cuts. After cuts our Sophmores/Freshman beat them again. The school has a VERY strong program underneath a very strong coach. Dan has been coaching for 40 years.

Looking at the performances in the AAA schools and looking at schools that will be moving down next year I believe we would have done well. I wouldn't say we would have won the title but I think we could have taken a playoff spot at the least. I believe the team could have beaten out Legacy at the least. I think we could have taken down the demons. A lot of the west was very close while west Fargo dominated the east. St. Mary's could have done well behind Spies, Dickhut, and Gendreu. St. Mary's OL and DL average 260 lbs per player. Birnbaum and Turner really open holes for our offense.

Looking at it I'd see it like this

BSM would start off 5-0 playing Jamestown, Mandan, Williston, GF central, and Fargo North
BSM would lose to Minot high 35-24
BSM would win vs legacy 41-35
BSM would go east to play West Fargo and lose 42-41 after OT
BSM would play the Demons for a spot on the playoffs and win in a high scoring match 56-49 on a Hail Mary pass to spies on the end zone

Playoffs:
Bismarck High - West Fargo
Century - Fargo South
BSM - WF Sheyanne
Minot - GF RR

Semis:
West Fargo - Century
BSM - Minot

Finals:
Minot - Century

Champs being Minot High.

Most likely very inaccurate but it's a simulation on what could happen if we were aaa this year. Next year not many AA teams will be left. I'm predicting a BSM vs Shanley finals game next year.

You are missing St Marys playing Century and Dickinson in the regular season in your scenario here. They would play both of them instead of a couple of the East teams you picked.

I often fall into the trap of thinking the good AA teams could compete with the AAA teams, and then I watch the AAA championship game and come back to reality. The AAA teams are so tough on the line of scrimmage, it would make it really hard for St. Mary's to execute their game plan. St. Mary's basically lined up and ran Iso, Power, and an occasional trap or counter play against Kindred. They barely had to use any of their option attack. They may have been the 4th seed in the West, but that is about it. Not knocking St. Mary's. Definitely the class of AA and Smrekar is a legend. Just think the upper tier of the AAA is on a different level.

There is a pre-season 7 v 7 tourney hosted by UMary each summer. Local teams (from all classes) participate, no pads, touch. Because of this, it's all about offense, QB play and speed of receivers, so it doesn't really indicate how good a team will be once the real season starts.

Having said that, Legacy actually won this year if I remember right. St. Mary's won the last 2 or 3 years.

It's actually fun to watch as the best "skill" athletes are competing against each other.
