All Time Track and Field Performances

Any thoughts on your favorite track and field performances of all time?
Maybe I should post this in the legends section, but there doesn't seem to be much action over there...

Anyway, I was involved mostly in the 90's, so the performances that I remember most are:

Jim Kleinsasser (Carrington) in the throws (also ran the 200m at the state meet)

Chris Wilmes (Beulah) setting the sprint records

Brian McCulley (Fargo South) in the 800 and up (future Duke runner)

Becki Wells dominating the distance events (future 1500m NCAA DI champ at Florida)

Jessi Melland and the Hazen girls teams of the early 90's

On a side note - anybody know of a site where you can find all of the winners of the ND track and field athletes of the year?

I agree...it was always fun to watch her do the triple and long jump!

I remember one JH meet when she out-jumped all the boys in a high jump competition going 5'0"

What about Whitney Carlson from Carrington (Actually PBK, but ran track for Carrington) in every event she did.

I think she has something like 20 state titles in track

Jared Essler was pretty dominant in his day... four state titles in events his senior year... single handed took Minot Ryan to a fourth or fifth place finish at state...

Killoran is awesome and so is the girl from Fargo South... Hotzler has a video on his blog of her winning an indoor invitational against the best runners in the country a few weeks ago.. sweet video... you all should check it out... ran a 2:08 something indoors... amazing for a girl! She'll be in the olympics someday... she gets my vote!

Jesse Kovash from dickinson trinity was one of the best throwers to watch. Wasn't a huge guy but was very quick. I believe he went to university of minnesota to throw.

I can't believe more people don't mention her. She was the first person who came to my mind when I saw the topic. From the gobison page:

Captured 19 state titles while competing for Carrington High School... Won four individual championships in four consecutive seasons, after taking gold in the 100 and the 1,600-meter relay as an eighth grader... Won four straight 200-meter dash, 300-meter hurdle and long jump championships... Holds overall state records in the 200 (24.98), 100 hurdles (14.33), 300 hurdles (42.26) and long jump (19-6 1/2).

I'll also mention Kinsey Coles. Seven state championships her last two years and a 2nd. The 2nd was to Sarah Klein in the 300h. Klein ran a 42.5, Coles was something like 42.9. Won a nat'l title in the 400h at NDSU.

Klein was also awesome to watch.

edit: found a site that said Coles was a 5 time NCAA champ, it doesn't mention what events...I'm guessing maybe 800 and some relays...not really sure

The record for the long jump is 23'2.5 by Rich Goff from Grandin back in 1970 - Oldest track record for either class boys or girls.

How about Brianna Reynolds from GF Central. over 48' in the shot and 170' in the disc... Neither record has had anyone legitimately close since.

But its hard to top Kliensasser setting two meet records and then anchoring a state championship relay team, by far the best showing of both speed and strength in a meet.

best of all time?
okay.
first of all, cliff cushman set records in the 1950's. the amount of athletic ability now compared to 50 years ago is much different...

secondly, at the rate ryan todhunter is going at in the hurdles there is no guarantee chappels records will even hold this year

I would agree that Kleinsasser's feat was amazing - but not the first time this has happened. Fred Walker in 84 or 85 took 1st place in both the Shot Put and 1st place in the 100 meter dash at the state track meet. Didn't set records in either - but still pretty amazing. Fred was from Mayville for those that didn't know who he was.
