Title 9 Compliance

Postby old#63 » Tue Nov 23, 2010 4:10 pm

I have a question. In July of this year a federal judge ruled that cheerleading can't be considered a sport offering for girls to satisfy compliance with Title 9. So, does that mean that high schools that offer winter sports of hockey, wrestling, and basketball for boys, while only offering basketball for girls are now out of compliance?

Are there even other sports we could add for girls though?

Well, I think girls hockey would be the natural offset to boy's hockey. Most of the schools that offer boys hockey also run girls programs, but there are some in the state that don't. And I'm not sure you need to match up sport for sport, but Title 9 does say you need to provide equal opportunity. It seems difficult to imagine that offering one 12 player sport for girls (basketball), while offering a 12 player sport (basketball), a 30 player sport (hockey), and a 15 player sport (wrestling) for boys is even close to being in compliance.

Make Wrestling and Hockey open to all. If you are good enough, boy or girl, you can play.

Not many girls on the wrestling and hockey teams but they can't complain if it is open to all.

Not many boys on the girls gymnastics team either as the boys just don't have it to compete in the girls events.
