MAYVILLE, N.D. – Mayville State University faces critical financial problems, and the key to fixing them is attracting more full-time students, campus officials say.
Administrators face a dilemma because they need to cut programs and staff to eliminate deficits, which total $870,000.
But doing that hurts the university’s ability to attract students – its main source of revenue.
That means the campus of about 625 full-time students and 287 part-time students has to do more with less.
To address the deficits, the campus has cut four members of its 170-person staff, reduced tuition waivers by one-third and eliminated the men’s and women’s soccer programs.

Should the taxpayers help Mayville State University with its debt problems?
Talk: What can Mayville State do to attract full-time students and bring in more revenue?
Steve Bensen, vice president for business affairs, said the university is dealing with the most serious financial challenges he’s seen in his 18 years there.
Mayville State hopes it can get some taxpayer relief in state funding to help pay for high fuel costs that have pushed the school’s money problems over the edge.
That, along with increasing enrollment and adequate state funding in the future, is the solution to getting Mayville State on solid ground, Bensen said.
