Do you celebrate your culture, do you do cultural things?  Native Americans hold pride in their culture, it is a religion.  Does Notre Dame poke fun at your religion?  I do not think they do!  The War Paint, the dancing, that is all part of the Native American Culture/Religion.

"Maybe the Redskins are helping pay for new casinos."

That is an ignorant and racist comment.

Yes I do in fact celebrate my culture.  Something called St. Patrick's Day.

So does eveyone else!  Tell me exactly what you are celebrating?  I am asking seriously, I don't know the history.  What is the meaning of St Patricks Day?

Not everyone celebrates it.  There are a lot of people who happen to be Irish out there.  We are celebrating our Irish Heritage.

You have? where?

Ming, I take it you attend Mass on March 17th?

Thank you NDFan, I never really knew that.  I just wanted someone to explain what it meant.  Was not trying to cut down anyone or anything.

Ming you made an ignorant statement about Redskins paying for casino's, it is greed that pays for those casino's.

High schools on reservations have used  the nickname "Sioux" for their teams.  If it truly was derogatory I don't think they would have used it.

Here is the letter to the NCAA from UND's President Charles Kupchella. I believe them and the board of higher ed will be meeting in Williston sometime this week to discuss a possible lawsuit. I don't see what UND has that they think they could win this. They need FULL support from the tribes in this state and they don't have it, get that and the problem would be easier solved. No side will come out of this argument happy.

So Ming...as celebrating St. Patrick's Day..do you mean getting drunk with all your friends like everyone else in the world..or do you actually do something cultural?

I want to keep the name as much as anybody, but with regard to the highlighted statement in your post, that's a myth. I don't believe the logos would ever be removed from these facilities even if the name were to be changed (too expensive to remove them), but in terms of banning UND teams from playing there as a punitive measure should the name be changed, that's not going to happen.

When it is all said and done, it doesn't make it right, if there are people or a culture that disagrees with the use of a name or a likeness of a mascot, there should be respect and sensitivity for those people or culture to not use it.

I, at one point supported the use of the name, but I have matured and changed my views.  I don't want to be remembered as a mascot or cartoon figure.  I want my Dakota culture remembered for its honor and respect.

There are always going to be ignorant people that may say things and belittle other cultures, why give them fuel by allowing the use of Native American Mascots and names?

When I tell a person down here in the Cities what my culture is, they say, "do you support the use of the Sioux name at UND?"  I do not want my culture remembered for that college, or any other school.  I want my culture remembered for what many of my people have fought and died for!!! These great chiefs & warriors didn't fight & die so we can be made a cartoon or mascot.  They fought and died to be equal.

I am surprised nobody has complained about the Dickinson "Midgets".

If UND has to change it then make Standing Rock change it too and all of the other schools on the reservations with offensive names.

I agree entirely with ming.  If reservations are so offended by the logo why do they pick similar logos for themselves?  and I still don't understand why they are that offended.  to have a soon to be D-1 school that is well respected pick a native american for its logo, you would think they would take pride in that.

i agree entirely with you CLU_08, i think that the American Indians are overreacting way too much. And also the NCAA is overstepping its boundries by a lot. they have no right to take away the right to use the nickname in postseason play. The other reason that i think it is just complete crap, is that they let Florida State get off the list. they have probably one of the worst cases of hostile and abusive mascots ever. He rides around on a horse dressed in indian clothing, screaming battle crys and throwing a flaming spear into the 50 yard line of the field. and the fans dont help out by doing their tomohawk chop and ohhhhhhhh,oh, ohhhhhhohhohhh, chant. i think it is just unbelievable and i cant stand it any longer. Ming makes an interesting point about the nicknames too. If you go to any reservation, all of the schools have their schools name as being either the warriors, or braves, or indians. they want UND to change their nickname because they are derogatory to their culture an yet they are using the same nicknames and logos. it just doesnt make any sense to me anymore

I disagree,  I do not want the negative publicity that mascot brings.  They do a good job at UND of explaining the name and what is stands for!  Sioux is not even a Dakota word!  It is a French word to discribe a race of peole, by calling them, Snakes!!!

If the name is offensive to a group or subset of a group of people, why not change it.  UND has changed their name in the past.  They could set a great example by changing their nickname, and turning a new positive leaf in their history.
