New Bison Coach

Surprised
I am very surprised that no one has started a conversation with regards to the Coach Bohl leaving the Bison program and who could possibly be up for the task of replacing him. I saw his show today, I felt he was sincere in saying that he has taken the program as far as he could. I think coaches really get a kick out of the building phase of a program. It will be a challenge in Wyoming, wish Coach Bohl all the best. NDSU really has it rolling and I am confident that the program will continue its winning ways. Not great timing for recruiting though.
Anyone heard the money difference in salary? I heard at coffee that the Fargo ($) team tried to put a package together to keep Coach here.
Is it a done, done deal?

Congrats to Coach Bohl.

Personally not happy with the timing of it. As a coach, he has preached team and family to his players for years. To announce this during this "unprecedented" run was not fair to his seniors or any player for that matter. This is a "once in a life time moment" for these players and IMHO, Wyoming and Coach Bohl could have waited to make sure it was done with the respect the NDSU football players deserved.

There is no way the Bison can put together a package which will rival what Wyoming can offer. I am not positive, but think Bohl's current package, with incentives, is between $400K - $500K. Believe I heard the package Wyoming is offering is $1.5 to $1.7 million.

Money talks and you really can't blame Coach Bohl for taking on a new challenge, especially for that type of monetary jump. But I do believe he could have practiced what he has preached and handled his "family" of Bison players with more respect by keeping this under wraps until they either lost or reached their ultimate goal as a team.

GO BISON!!!

In regards who the new coach will be, like everything else, it all depends on if the coach is attracted to money or wins. NDSU only having one of those things. These fallowing names are likely to be fired after this year. Let me remind you it is VERY unlikely that these coaches even consider NDSU.

Kirk Ferentz - iowa
Bo pelini - Nebraska
Lane Kiffin - USC
Dan Mullen - Mississippi State
Randy Edsall - Maryland
Tim Beckman - Illinois

saying it was not fair and lack of respect for his players is complete lack of understanding of the situation. fbs teams are looking for coaches in december. if bohl were to say "hey let me get back to you in january after our championshp run", Wyoming would have a different coach. Wyoming was announcing their coach this week regardless. Coaches now days leave their programs when their season is still going on. Bowling Greens just left today for Wake even though they have a bowl game coming up. Same thing with Brian Kelly with Cincy and Notre Dame. Its not lack of respect or classless. It's just how it works now days. Wyoming needed a new coach asap for obvious reasons. While it took a lot of fans and players off guard, it was going to happen at some point and it was likely going to be during the middle of a playoff run.

Gene Taylor put together a package to try and keep him here longer last year. Which Bohl signed. There was nothing in the plans to keep him here after the announcement this weekend. As Gene Taylor has stated, NDSU just cant compete with that money. Him leaving for Wyoming took myself and tons of fans off guard. A lot of Bison fans thought he would leave for a better program.

But it appears Wyoming fits for him and he is a Midwest guy and can continue to recruit the midwest and bring a toughness to the program. He'll bring his style of football to the MWC, which will be much different than the current norm there which is a pass heavy league. He can turn them around but it will be very tough. Plus, if he wants to end up at a Nebraska, Iowa, Kansas State or something, this is his best bet.

ferentz is safe for now. they went 8-4. also the buyout for him would be huge. not gonna happen soon. dan mullen also should be safe.

You bring up some fair points, but with all due respect, it doesn't work that way everywhere. For you to use Kelly leaving Cincy for Notre Dame only proves my point. You should maybe check how the Cincy players and the school felt about him leaving before using that as an example. And as far as Clawson leaving for Wake Forest, well BG was not undefeated and is not playing for a national championship and Clawson also left and is not coaching them in their bowl game. Classless. Wake is happy now, wait til he does it to them.

Listen, I don't want to beat a dead horse. Everyone has sugarcoated it to death and all the right things have been said. Coach Bohl has done a great job for us and he deserves to better himself and his family. He's staying to coach through the playoffs and that shows Coach Bohl has respect for NDSU and it's players. Wyoming is allowing it, and that's "nice" too. Your statement of "Its not lack of respect or classless. It's just how it works now days," is the problem. It doesn't have to work that way. If Bohl was their man, and Wyoming is a class act, then they would have wanted his commitment but could have been willing to announce when he finished his run. With the state of the Wyoming program, how many recruits do you honestly think that they would lose in the next month? And once Bohl gets there, how many do you think they gain?

Whether it be college football or the business world, a man's word and the way he conducts business tells more about him than wins and losses. I hope the underclass players, who signed on to play for coach Bohl at NDSU for 4/5 years, feel the same as you do. It's just how it works these days, right?

I really think they need to offer the job to Vigen or Klieman to keep continuity in the program and with the recruiting base. Decide what one is a better fit and offer it to them soon as the other will go with Bohl I'm sure. If not, you risk losing both.

I heard Nick Saban hasn't accepted the extension offered by Alabama, maybe this is why?? :) :)

We've narrowed it down to 3 for Saban:

Alabama
Texas
NDSU

And only two of them have a chance at a championship ha

Bison-Vikes, in the paper article I read, the explanation for why it was announced at this time was "in this day and age, it's impossible to keep anything secret." Which ultimately I think is a fair reason. Would you rather it be handled how it was or about the Bison's semifinal gameday have this leak out?

If those were the only two options, then of course how it happened would be the best of the two. This is kind of personal for me because I had it happen to my son. Played for 2 years at a school, moved up the depth chart and then the coach retired, new coach and staff came in with a completely different scheme. Didn't fit him and ended up leaving.

I read the same article you did. What would you expect the media to say? The media is half the problem with a lot of these scenarios. "Got to have that breaking news". Doesn't matter what the ramifications are and who is affected. Can you honestly tell me if you want to keep something under wraps, you can't? Personally, the ideal situation would have been Bohl being up front with the players in the first place. From the reaction of the few players who have talked, they didn't know and found out through social media. That's my problem with the whole situation. Once again, everyone has sugarcoated it, from Bohl, to Taylor to the media. But IMO, they are trying to minimize the damage after the fact. It sounds like Bohl has been "on the market" for a while, and he should have at least been up front with the players. That's my only point.

On another note, when do you think we will hear who the next Bison coach will be? I'm assuming they are already in discussions with their top few choices, but would guess no announcement will come out until the Bison lose and are out of the playoffs or possibly in the gap before the championship game. Would think they would like to keep the distractions to a minimum during the playoff run after this big blow.

I think it's imperative to keep at least one of the higher ranking assistant coaches to keep continuity between the players and new coaching staff. Also, not sure if Kramer (Strength & Conditioning) would be considered as part of the staff leaving with Bohl, but need to keep him in place as well. He does a tremendous job all year long with these athletes.

Klieman was announced as the new head coach today. Heard he was keeping two assistants and the rest were going with Bohl to Wyoming.

Has anyone heard which assistants are going and which are staying? I heard Fuchs and Kramer are leaving. Can anyone confirm that?

BV, do you read Bisonville? I'm sure the info you seek is in that madhouse of a forum.

been awhile since this post but Bohl was planning on telling players that Sunday about it. He wouldnt have let it come out without telling his team. As previously mentioned it was leaked before the official announcement the next day
