ESPN Mt. Rushmore

Postby alexanderthegreat » Tue Jan 20, 2009 2:15 am

ESPN has aired a commercial challenging their viewers to come up with a "Mt. Rushmore" of athletes/sports figures from their respective states. The set that ESPN deems the best, wins (idk what)Who would that be from North Dakota? I personally have no idea where to start. I'm probably too young to give an accurate set of people.

I like the Virgil Hill idea. Here's a couple more: Dale Brown, and you could just leave Teddy Roosevelt up there - he was a huge sports booster as well as avid hunter. I believe he even had ownership in a sports franchise or two in his day.

Phil Jackson, Roger Maris, and Virgil Hill are no brainers. The most famous sports stars from ND hands down. After that, who knows. I think Hafner has just as good an argument to be on there as Erstad. Kliensasser and Hansen could be on there as well. There are also lesser known North Dakotas that have made the NFL, MLB, NHL, etc. I don't think we have one that you can say absolutely belongs in the #4 spot.

I still think they are basically equal. I throw out the World Series....that's a team accomplishment, not just Erstad. Erstad had that one great year where he threatened to break the hits record, but hasn't done a whole lot since and has turned into a journeyman outfielder. Hafner had that one great season were he was in the MVP race, but hasn't gone a lot since then either. If Hafner can come back healthy this year and have another great season, I'd definitely put him ahead of Erstad.

I have a tough time putting Steve Blehm on there...when only a few people had the opportunity to see him play....You have to have Virgil Hill on there. I would also put Lute Olson on there....he and phil jackson are two of the best coaches in bball history.

I don't like this, I looked at every states and ND and Mont. both have Phil Jackson, and ND and I don't remember who have Lute Olsen, I think each state should have their own 4!

I laughed so much when I saw this, I voted for Kentucky just for this...apparently not many people find this funny beacuse they have like 0.4% of americas vote but ND is standing strong in 4th with about 16% of the vote!

It is really impressive that north dakota is ahead of states like texas and north carolina. you would have to throw virgil hill in forth but erstad is a worthy candidate

With Erstad there are a couple things to remember. 4 sport star in high school. Was the punter on Nebraska's national champion football team. Also was an MLB All-Star one season and could have been a couple of others. Its the body of work that gets him the vote.
