The main thing I agree with is that I wish the NDHSAA would get out of the box of wanting an even number of teams in all the upper classes. The level you play at should be based on school size, not some arbitrary number of teams needed to fill a class.

I'd start with defining how big a school should be to be able to comfortably play 11 man vs needing to be 9 man. Once that is decided, every school above that line would be 11 man and you can divide the 11 man teams however you wish. And if you wind up with 15 AAA teams or 29 A teams, then that should be acceptable.

Next domino is Grafton.

St. Thomas and Drayton out. Grafton falls to A, Stanley up to AA.

Current AA schools: Devils Lake, Valley City, Hillsboro-CV, Kindred, Wahpeton, Central Cass
Stanley, WC, St. Marys, Belcourt, Beulah, New Town.

Did that huge mega co-op of tiny schools around Cooperstown breakup? If so, what are they doing?

Yes. From what I've heard GCC is going 9man and BCN is cooping with VC. You'd think BCN would have enough kids to field a 9man team, though. Haven't heard anything on Midkota

I would say there is no way FW stays in 11man. They will drop to a JV schedule or go the 6man route. They are just starting to build their program again. I also think Drake-Anamoose will either coop with Velva or Harvey or go the 6man route as well.

Also curious to what BCN, Drayton, and Midkota will end up doing.

You said "build their program again." Were they ever good in FB?

Larimore has 13 or 14 kids out this year with 7 seniors. I'm not sure what their plans are next year.

They have never made the playoffs, but had one year with 3 wins. By build their program, I meant simply competing at the varsity level and having the chance to win a game or two. If you have 12-15 kids that are all fresh/soph you don't have that chance. You got up to 11man and that all goes out the window.

What's the story there? They have plenty of kids in the school, why the low participation? Just a couple year dip or are their JH numbers low, too?

St. Mary’s would rather travel to Belcourt, Stanley, and New Town and win by 40 than play the BisMan schools in their backyard and be in competitive games. Kudos to Shanley for some self awareness and opting up.

I’d agree except I would put Garrison/Max in Region 3 and ship Rugby over to Region 2. Leaving Botno in Region 3 also would not put WNG out there on an island.

Is Shanley moving up a done deal? As for St. Mary's not moving up, they did the right thing staying in 2AA. Shanley is going to struggle. They don't have a lot of size, and the numbers are not up from a year ago.

I kinda assumed Thompson and H-N would be the two but you never know sometimes ;). I’ve seen realignment committee do some weird things in the past...Carrington is one of those teams that could go either direction

A couple new updates to the plan:

1) Bowman County has decided to opt-up from 9-man to Class A. Because of this, Westhope/Newburg/Glenburn moves down from Class A to 9-man.

2) Drake-Anamoose has decided to drop from 9-man to 6-man. The total number of 9-man schools now stands at 38.

Fact. But uncertain what this means in years to come. I think they actually feel good about their numbers in years to come. But much of the media stories haven’t touched on that much.

The D-A situation will be interesting. If they don’t do the 6-man route, it will probably impact the realignment for their coop opportunities maybe with the exception of TGU (thinking TGU, Harvey and Velva as their coop possibilities - they coop with Velva in spring sports).

True I would say D-A should takes the 6 man route. But my two part question is.

1. How many regions will their be 5 or 6.
2. How many teams in each region.

Cause i've seen Bowman County had to opt up to Class A.

Now with Bowman opted up possibly. And with D-A going 6 man I heard their going to be 38 teams in 9 Man which means 4 regions will have 6 teams & two regions will have 7 teams.

Region 1
Finley-Sharon-Hope-Page
Hankinson,
Maple Valley-Enderlin,
May-Port-CG
Richland
Wyndmere-Lidgerwood

Region 2
Cavalier
Griggs County Central
Nelson County
North Border
North Star
New Rockford-Sheyenne

Region 3
Kidder County
LaMoure-L-M
Linton-HMB
Napoleon-G-S
South Border
Strasburg-Zeeland

Region 4
Benson County
Dunseith
North Prairie
St. John
Surrey
Towner-Granville-Upham

Region 5
Beach
Central McLean
Grant County-Flasher
Hettinger-Scranton
Mott-Regent-New England

Region 6
Divide County
Kenmare-Bowbells-BC
Lewis & Clark-OR
Mohall-Lansford-Sherwood
Parshall-White Shield
Ray-Powers Lake
Tioga
Trenton-Trinity Christian

Now with that being said if Westhope-Newburg-Glenburn is 9 Man which region do u put them in the six region format. If u put them in region 6 then u have 9 teams you have to drop two teams. I'd say put Parshall-White Shield in region 5. But what about Garrison-Max since they only have a JV team this year. Would they be willing to drop to 9 Man. If so put Garrison-Max in region 5 as well. Please try to help me understand how these regions will end up. Thanks

Don't "BLAME" anyone. This is purely a numbers game by NDHSAA. Whether we agree or disagree with the format or process, it is simply a matter of drawing lines between enrollment of boys in grades 7-10 the 2 years prior to the roll out of the new plan. The development may be more complex, but in the end, they simply draw a line based on how many teams they want at each level and what the adjusted enrollments are.

Yes, schools can "opt up" if they chose, but not down. There is a philosophical question about whether or not a team should opt up for competition purposes. Kudos to Shanley for that decision, however, I am not going to paint St. Mary's into a corner when there are 4 schools with larger adjusted enrollments in the new plan.

I cannot support the comment that Jamestown is "getting jacked around again". The Jamestown administration lead the charge for the current plan. In doing so, they very specifically said, "we shouldn't have to play teams that are 3 times bigger than us", (Jamestown vs Minot), yet, they are more than happy to play against teams 3 times smaller than them (Jamestown vs Grafton; Jamestown vs Central Cass). You can't have it both ways. According to the adjusted enrollments in the new plan, Jamestown is 15th in size, Shanley is 18th. There will be 16 AAA teams, and 12 AA teams. Of those 28 teams, the disparity in enrollment between Jamestown and the smallest current AA team is 213 students (the disparity is larger than the enrollment of that school). You would have to go all the way up to the 6th largest AAA to find the same disparity. If you take the disparity between Jamestown and the second largest AA school currently, is 135 students, meaning you have to get to the 11th largest AAA school currently.

There may be schools getting jerked around by the plan, that seems to be the rallying cry every 2 years, however, Jamestown IS NOT ONE OF THEM.

Sorenson23, Why do you think there will be 5 or 6 regions in 9 man football? I can't see any way that there will not be 4 regions. It will make playoffs go so much smoother.
