I think it'll be interesting to see what kind of defense 11 man west has since they have AA POY (D-dine/
O-line), and AAA POY (LB).

A sweep for the west. I will honestly say I didn't see that coming. I saw an 11 man victory for the west but didn't think the 9man west team would be able to slow down the east team with crest and the other talent on the east side. Great games by all four teams.

It was just like old times for Grant County-Flasher’s Taylor Krenz.

Krenz and former Storm teammate Zackary Schmidt played pitch and catch in the Fargodome on Sunday night, sparking a fast start that led to a West win in the Shrine Bowl nine-man football game.

Krenz, a University of Jamestown recruit, threw for 307 yards and five touchdowns as the West rolled to a 48-14 victory over the East.

Schmidt, a future North Star Athletic Association rival of Krenz’s when as he heads to Valley City State in the fall, was again one of his favorite targets. Schmidt caught eight passes for 216 yards and four touchdowns.

J.W. Froelich, another of Krenz’s Grant County-Flasher targets, caught two passes for 52 yards, one of them going for a 27-yard score.

Krenz and company jumped all over the East defense early on, scoring 20 points in the first quarter and opening up a 34-0 halftime lead.

Keifer Langan of St. John scored the West’s first touchdown, on a 1-yard run set up by a big pass play.

Krenz completed his first 15 passes of the game, and the West scored on its first four possessions.

Fernando Blanco of Kittson County Central, Minn., was the West’s leading rusher with 38 yards.

Jared Olsgaard of Park Christian, Minn., got the East on the scoreboard on a 8-yard fourth quarter TD run.

Kayne Griffith of Richland added a 12-yard scoring run for the East. It was his first TD after missing most of his senior season after suffering a season-ending injury in the Colts’ opener following an outstanding junior season.

With the win, the West lent some credibility to the nine-man rivalry. The East had won four of the five previous games to run its advantage in the series to 12-4.

The West’s last previous Shrine nine-man victory was a 14-7 triumph in 2011.

How did the west slow down crest? did he get hurt? I would figure he would be even more dangerous with the talent of the other best players from the east.

Combination of things slowed him down. West had a good defense and won the battle up front. They played Chrest on defense some trying to slow down the Wests passing game so he wasn't always on offense.

FARGO — The Fargodome has seen plenty of good defensive performances.

The turf saw another Sunday in the 11-man game of the 41st annual Shrine Bowl.

The West dominated the East, scoring a decisive 21-2 victory.

“Our defense was outstanding all game,” West coach Mark Gibson, who also coaches Bismarck High School, said. “It was an impressive performance.”

The West’s defense was sparked by plenty of Bismarck players.

Former Demons Stanley Jones and Thomas Sease spent plenty of time in the East’s backfield.

Jones, who will be playing football at North Dakota State in the fall, accounted for two sacks and two other tackles for loss.

Sease contributed with two sacks, while Century graduate Drew Lingle finished off the game with a sack and a forced fumble.

“The defense did a great job all week,” Sease said. “We had big plays from the defensive line and the safeties.”

The first half was a defensive battle, which led to the first score of the game.

The West stood up the East at its own goal line.

“I was surprised at how well we came together,” Sease said. “We had a good game plan and executed it.”

But when the West took over at its own 1-yard line, the East opened the scoring with 3:08 left in the first quarter.

Fargo South’s Tyler Trefethren and Grand Forks Red River’s Jake Robson combined to tackle Detroit Lake’s (Minn.) Casey Paskey in the end zone for a safety.

Defense led to the second score of the game when the West’s Tucker Wojahn of Velva recovered a fumble on a bad snap at the East 37-yard line. Wojahn also had two sacks.

“I was surprised at how quickly we came together,” Gibson said. “Our defense rallied to the ball all game long.”

The West took the lead when Lake Park-Audubon (Minn.) Mason Swegarden threw a 2-yard touchdown pass to Rugby’s Chris Hamilton with 8:40 to go in the second quarter. Minot’s Ben Love kicked the extra point and the West led 7-2.

“We were able to get some big turnovers,” Gibson said. “And we got scores out of them.”

The West was not done in the first half when it got its ball back at its own 40-yard line late in the first 24 minutes.

Swegarden threw another touchdown pass, this one to Minot’s Josh Pizzo, with only 34 seconds left in the first half to make it 14-2 West.

The West defense came up with another takeaway, which turned into another West touchdown.

Minot’s Jordan Seiderman picked off a pass and returned it to the East 2-yard line.

Swegarden found the end zone himself this time, covering the two yards and making it 21-2 West with 8:27 left in the third quarter.

The East’s offense was on the field for most of the second half, but the West’s defense continued to stand strong. The East turned the ball over on downs twice in the second 24 minutes.

“We bent a few times but we didn’t break,” Gibson said. “Our defense was on the field the whole second half.”

The East rushed for only one yard in the first half and had only 27 total yards in the first two quarters.

Jones got a chance to play against another future Bison in Kindred’s Eric Bachmeier.

“It was a lot of fun playing against him,” Jones said. “Hopefully we can have better moments on this field as Bison teammates.”

It was also a little bittersweet for the former Demons. Bismarck lost in the Class AAA state championship game at the Fargodome last fall.

“The last game we played here didn’t end the way we wanted it to,” Jones said. “It was nice to come back here and get a big win.”

Gibson thinks there are plenty of good times ahead for Jones at NDSU.

“The Bison are getting a guy who has a motor,” Gibson said. “He never stops. His motor is constant. He is a gem who has a chance to be very good.”

Jones is projected as a defensive end at NDSU, while Bachmeier is a strong safety.

Two other future Bison saw action. Dickinson’s Levi Jordheim and Stanley-Powers Lake’s Levi Hoiby are preferred walk-ons this fall. Jordheim had three rushes for 10 yards for the West.

Other local athletes also participated in the game. Century’s Aaron Doan returned one punt for two yards. Killdeer’s Calum Blankenship had a reception for 27 yards for the West. Linton-HMB’s Al Gefroh recovered a fumble for the East.

Very strange game. Not at all what I expected. The West line on offense and defense was a beast. Chrest was a complete non factor, which I still can't believe. Had one very nice run in the first quarter but it was negated by a holding penalty. Never heard his name again. Actually got burned defensively several times for passing TD's.
