Of note

n Grafton beat Fargo Shanley 22-8 in the AA state championship game last season, giving the Spoilers their first state football title. Shanley was denied in its bid for a third straight AA state championship.

n The East dominated the 2011 playoffs. All four East Region teams beat West Region teams in the state quarterfinals.

A LOOK AHEAD TO 2012

Four teams to watch

Teams listed in alphabetical order

n Fargo Shanley: The Deacons were senior-dominated last season. But the overall program is strong, as indicated by its berth in three straight AA state title games. Tackles Dave Kjera and all-stater Josh Berg return to anchor the offensive and defensive lines. Running back Joe Laske (200 rushing yards) and receiver Grady Meyer also are returning regulars on an offense that could get key contributions from quarterback Chase Montplaisir, tight end Kelvin Caga and speedy back Danny Stasch. Laske and Brett Hettenbaugh are playmakers at linebacker spots. Receiver-linebacker Dan Arnold, a transfer from Chicago, could be an impact player.

n Grafton: The Spoilers’ big-play offense led them to a Class AA state title last season. Now they’ll rely more on defense and the offensive line. Grafton figures to be more run-oriented, working behind a line that returns starters Jaime Villarreal, Zach Peterson and Travis Dolan. Julian Martinez figures to be a key running back, and Christian Lunde switches from wide receiver to quarterback to run the offense. The defense builds around Peterson, a returning all-stater, Villarreal, Lunde and Austin Contreras.

n Griggs-Barnes County: It starts up front, as G-BC returns its entire offensive line, a unit led by 290-pound sophomore Justin Hanson and all-stater Trevor Anderson. The run-oriented offense is paced by speedster Wyatt Steckler (660 rushing yards), a qualifier in the 100 at last spring’s state track meet, and versatile Jacoby Kramlich. Pete Fehr returns from a knee injury to anchor the defense from his middle linebacker position.

n Wahpeton: The Huskies figure to have a strong running game. Brock Lingen (626 rushing yards, 6.3 per-carry average) and Tyler Gripentrog (598 rushing yards) give Wahpeton a pair of speedy backs. They’ll work behind a line anchored by veterans Tyler Ringdahl and all-stater Joel Green. Linebacker Cole Gilles is the top playmaker on a defense that also returns Green, Ringdahl, Lingen and Gripentrog to the starting lineup.

Of note

n Linton-HMB, which was undefeated in the region during the regular season, advanced in the playoffs all the way to the state title game before dropping a 42-6 decision to Stanley-Powers Lake in the championship game.

n Oakes, Milnor-North Sargent and Maple Valley-Enderlin also were playoff qualifiers. Maple Valley-Enderlin lost 21-20 to Linton-HMB in the state semifinals, a game in which Maple Valley-Enderlin built a 20-0 lead at halftime.

A LOOK AHEAD TO 2012

Four teams to watch

Teams listed in alphabetical order

n Linton-HMB: The strength starts up front. The Lions return four starters on the offensive line in guards Clay Jacob and Ethen Roemmich and tight ends Al Gefroh and Jordan Gross. Brock Nagel (417 rushing yards) switches from fullback to tailback and Mike Oien will join him in the backfield. The team is inexperienced at quarterback, where Brooks Flyberg takes over for graduated all-stater Tanner Purintun. The defense is led by Roemmich and Gefroh on the line and Jacob and Nagel at linebacker.

n Milnor-North Sargent: Twelve seniors graduated from last season’s team, which had only two juniors on the roster. Yet six offensive and six defensive starters return. All-stater Zach Drevlow and tight end Wyatt Mund anchor the line on an offense that will gear more to the running of Andrew Martinson (594 rushing yards), while Landon Mund is a playmaker at receiver and linebacker. Briton Bussman takes over at quarterback for graduated all-stater Josh Hansana.

n Northern Cass: The Jaguars build around a big, veteran line. Craig Kyllo (6-5, 325), Chance Olsby (6-0, 265) and Isaiah Seefried (5-11, 225) all are returning two-way starters up front. Working behind the blocking unit are the two biggest playmakers on last season’s 3-6 team, as Maverick Symington rushed for 719 yards and Taylor Kyllo rushed for 394 yards while completing 65-of-131 passes for 758 yards.

n Oakes: There is a veteran cast, as seven players are back with starting experience on both sides of the ball. Quarterback Trent Ptacek (62-of-104, 891 yards passing) leads an offense that has a promising corps of skill-position players in Dalton Magill, Keaton Peterson, Stephen Quandt, Cole Ehrlin and speedster Blake Hollingsworth. Ricardo Gamon returns as a two-way starting lineman, but Oakes will otherwise be inexperienced on the line.

Of note

n Harvey-Wells County was the state’s top-ranked team in the final Class A poll. But the team was upset 15-14 by Maple Valley-Enderlin in the first round of the playoffs.

n Region playoff qualifiers Harvey-Wells County, Larimore, Westhope-Newburg-Glenburn and Park River/Fordville-Lankin all were eliminated in the first round.

A LOOK AHEAD TO 2012

Four teams to watch

Teams listed in alphabetical order

n Harvey-Wells County: The Hornets graduated a pair of Division I college recruits M.J. Stumpf (NDSU) and Tucker Nordby (UND). The cupboard isn’t bare, however, as six starters return on offense and defense. Fullback Devin Haxton (201 rushing yards) and speedster Koby Houchin (549 yards, 7.7 per-carry average) will run behind an experienced offensive line led by Austan Schmidt and Todd Selzler. Linebackers Haxton, Selzler and Landon Littlefield lead the defense.

n Larimore: The Polar Bears were second in the region with a young lineup, as non-seniors started at seven offensive and six defensive positions. Brayden Hofer, an all-state pick as a sophomore last season, anchors both lines. P.J. Peterson, a quarterback and all-state linebacker, is a playmaker on both sides of the ball. With the graduation of speedster Chris Arvin, the run-oriented offense figures to have a more balanced look led by Derek Grogan. Blake Yahna also will be a defensive playmaker.

n Park River/Fordville-Lankin: The Aggies have a potent one-two combination on both sides of the ball in seniors Chad Jelinek and Cole Rehovsky. Jelinek rushed for 934 yards and Rehovsky for 634. Kyle Ferguson and Nathan Iverson are back on the line to provide veteran blockers. Rehovsky (77 tackles) and Jelinek (all-state, 96 tackles, 6 sacks) also excel on defense from their linebacker positions. Park River/F-L returns five offensive and four defensive starters. Jesse Blaskey, coming off an injury, will add speed to the lineup.

n Westhope-Newburg-Glenburn: The Sioux have a veteran unit, with eight starters back on both offense and defense. Westhope-N-G’s strength is at the skill positions with quarterback Hunter Braaten (401 rushing yards, 41-of-86 passing for 511 yards) and twin brothers Karlie Hancock (322 rushing yards, 133 receiving yards) and Kodie Hancock (116 receiving yards). Devin Korynta returns to anchor an inexperienced group of linemen.

Of note

n Due to declining enrollment and participation numbers, Drayton/Valley-Edinburg is playing only a junior varsity schedule this season. Central Valley, meanwhile, has dropped its varsity program and has joined Hillsboro in a co-op.

n Cavalier, North Border, Hillsboro and New Rockford-Sheyenne were playoff qualifiers. None of the four advanced beyond the quarterfinals.

A LOOK AHEAD TO 2012

Four teams to watch

Teams listed in alphabetical order

n Cavalier: The strength should be a defense that has six starters back from a unit that limited opponents to averages of 290.3 yards and 15.3 points a game last season. All-staters Spencer Robbins (85 tackles, 5.5 sacks) and Ryan Chrest (75 tackles, 6 interceptions) lead the defense. Chrest (1,120 rushing yards, 465 passing yards) and Jarret Johnson (975 rushing yards) head a run-oriented offense. Robbins anchors an inexperienced offensive line.

n Hillsboro-Central Valley: After graduating all-state quarterback Brandon Otto, a duel passing and running threat, the Burros will build around an offensive line that returns guards Jack Breen and Sam Schultz and tight end Jake Hurt to the starting lineup. Dylan Bowen (641 yards, 9.0 per carry), Brendan Dufner (494 yards, 7.8 per carry) and Jordy Bolstad (194 yards, 10.2 per carry) are top ballcarriers. Dufner will switch from fullback to replace Otto at quarterback.

n Lakota/Adams-Edmore: The Raiders are long on experience, with seven starters back on both sides of the ball. The strength is at the skill positions. Chris Miller (1,139 yards, 9.1 per carry), Jaron Moor (624 rushing yards, 8.7 per carry) and Dylan Eichelberger (285 yards, 4.6 per carry) are proven ballcarriers. Back to run the offense is Eric Haugland, who passed for 343 yards and rushed for 367. Eichelberger (95 tackles, 4 sacks) leads the defense.

n New Rockford-Sheyenne: The Rockets were 6-4 last season with only two seniors on the team. Eight starters on offense and seven on defense return. New Rockford-Sheyenne builds around Alex Perleberg (942 rushing yards), Ethan Haley (166 yards rushing, 440 yards receiving) and all-state defensive player Josh Edmonson (122 tackles). Jacob Lommen returns to anchor both line units.

A LOOK AHEAD TO 2012

Four teams to watch

Teams listed in alphabetical order

n North Star: Big-play potential abounds, as almost all the top offensive weapons return from last season’s state runner-up team. The veterans include the all-state passing combination of Jake Hagler (139-of-229 passing for 2,340 yards) and Daniel Grande (84-1,494 receiving), as well as running back Colton Braun (1,003 rushing yards, 6.6 per-carry average). Tight end Brooks Larson and 255-pound guard Steven Hunt return up front, but the line units are otherwise inexperienced.

n St. John: After several seasons in the playoffs, the Woodchucks missed the postseason in 2011. They’ll try to bounce back behind a strong junior class. Nick Martin, a returning two-way starter, anchors the lines. Kiefer Langan runs the option offense after starting at quarterback as a sophomore last season. A strength of the team is speed in the backfield with Tanner Langan, Joe Mickelson and Dylan Stewart.

n Surrey: Power is the style. Tayler Wallstrum, a 215-pound fullback, rushed for 519 yards last season. He runs behind a veteran line led by 335-pound guard Holden Hartley, 260-pound center Hunter Bakke and 220-pound tight end Laramy Adams. Reiley Steier also will help the ground game; he rushed for 351 yards last season before being sidelined by an injury. Linebackers Wallstrum and Wyatt Kidney lead the defense.

n Towner-Granville-Upham: There’s speed in the backfield in Eli Luna (859 rushing yards last season), Kendal Green (501) and Ridge Bachmeier. Colter Thorp and 6-4, 250-pound Luke Bacon lead a veteran blocking unit. The offense is a strength; the defense is an unknown. Anchoring the defense are Bacon on the line and brothers Colter and Hunter Thorp at linebacker.
